Das schöne Abendmahl, das wir zusammen gegessen haben

처음으로 직접 삼계탕을 끓여 먹었을 때를 잊을 수가 없다. 얼마 전까지 살아 있었을 동물의 피부와 뼈마디를 손으로 만지는 감각은 낯설면서도 흥미로웠다. 내가 끓인 삼계탕은 엄마의 삼계탕과 비슷하게 맛있었지만, 이전과는 전혀 다른 느낌이 들었다. ‘음식을 먹는다’라는 행위가 순전히 ‘맛을 음미하’는 것만이 아니라는 것을 실감했기 때문이다. 재료를 요리하기 좋게 손질하고, 조리하고, 음식을 떠서 입에 넣고, 턱을 움직여 이빨로 그것을 부수어 목구멍으로 삼키는 일련의 동작이, 너무나 많이 반복해서 익숙하다는 말조차 어색한 이 동작이 생경하게 다가왔다.

“먹는다’라는 행위의 본질은 생존을 위해서 다른 존재를 ‘잡아먹는다’와 같은 의미가 아닐까?

우리가 식사하는 공간을 더 밝고 우아하게 장식하고, 음식을 담는 식기의 장식을 화려하게 만들고, 음식을 먹기 위한 다양한 도구를 개발하고, 그에 맞는 사용 방법 및 규칙을 정하고, 조리되어 나오는 음식의 모습을 더 아름답게 만드는 것은 어쩌면 이러한 감각을 잊기 위한 노력일지도 모른다는 생각이 들었다.

똑같은 분장을 한 네 명의 사람이 초콜릿으로 만들어진 돼지머리를 함께 잘라 먹는 의식을 한다.

초콜릿을 먹는 사람들의 동작은 익숙하고, 한편으로는 우아하지만, 식사하기에 앞서 그것을 썰기 위해 식탁 위에서 벌어진 한 편의 난투극 같은 장면은 뒤이어 나오는 이 장면들을 전혀 다른 방식으로 이해하게 만든다.

(ENG) Many animals eat other living things in order to survive, and humans do the same thing. The act of eating is actually brutal. It is the true characteristic of all living things. But only human beings have developed the eating culture over a long period of time in order to hide the cruelty of reality and nature of human. There are various dishes and complicated table manners and customs in the eating cultures. The more elegant and splendid the ritual looks, paradoxically, the more clearly it emphasizes the animalistic side of humans.
In Korea, a pig's head is sometimes used for a ceremony. People think that the pig brings us wealth and happiness. When I was young, I saw the pig’s head in a ceremony and I remember the pig’s head as a symbol, which shows the cruelty of human beings.
We can survive without sweets. Nevertheless you eat them just to enjoy their taste. For this reason I made a pig's head with chocolate and jam. The performers in the video cut the head of chocolate up and eat it. With the same costume and make-up, each performer lost their individuality and they could be described as a brutal group.

(DE) Viele Tiere essen andere Lebewesen, um zu überleben und Menschen tun das auch. Der Akt des Essens ist eigentlich brutal. Es ist der wahre Charakter aller Lebewesen. Aber nur Menschen haben die Esskultur längere Zeit hindurch fortentwickelt, um die Grausamkeit der Realität und der Natur zu verstecken. In der Esskultur gibt es verschiedene Gerichte und komplizierte Tischmanieren und Sitten. Je eleganter und prächtiger das Ritual aussieht, paradoxerweise umso deutlicher hebt es die animalische Seite des Menschen hervor.
In Korea benutzt man manchmal einen Schweinekopf für eine Zeremonie. Man denkt, dass das Schwein uns Reichtum und Glück einbringt. Der Schweinekopf war für mich ein erstes Symbol der Grausamkeit der Menschen.
Ohne Süßigkeiten kann man überleben. Trotzdem isst man sie, nur um ihren Geschmack zu genießen. Aus diesem Grund habe ich mit Schokolade und Marmelade einen Schweinekopf angefertigt. Die Performer in dem Video sollten ihn zerschneiden und essen. Durch das gleiche Kostüm und die gleiche Schminke hat jeder Performer seinen individuellen Charakter verloren und sie konnten als eine brutale Gruppe dargestellt werden.
